Where is Khatu Shyam? (Khatu Shyam kahan hai)

The Khatu Shyam Mandir is in the small town of Khatu in Sikar district, Rajasthan, roughly 80 km north-west of Jaipur. The nearest big towns are Reengus (17 km) and Sikar (around 50 km). Because it sits so close to the Jaipur–Sikar highway, Jaipur is the most popular starting point for the yatra.

Who is Khatu Shyam Ji?

Khatu Shyam Ji is worshipped as Barbarik, the grandson of Bhima and son of Ghatotkacha from the Mahabharata. According to the legend, Barbarik was a mighty warrior who promised to fight for the losing side. Lord Krishna, knowing this would prolong the war, asked for his head as a gift. Barbarik gave it without hesitation, and Krishna blessed him to be worshipped as Shyam in Kalyug. That is why devotees call him "Haare ka Sahara" – the support of those who have lost hope.

The present temple has a white marble structure, and the sacred head (sheesh) of Baba Shyam is worshipped inside. Close to the temple is Shyam Kund, the holy pond where the sheesh is believed to have been found. Many devotees take a dip here before darshan.

Jaipur to Khatu Shyam Ji taxi fare

The taxi fare depends on three things: the car (hatchback, sedan, SUV or tempo traveller), whether it is a one-way drop or a same-day round trip, and the date (Ekadashi and the Phalgun mela see heavy demand). A same-day round trip usually works out best, because the car waits for you during darshan and drives you back.

When you compare fares, check that the quote includes toll and parking, and ask how many waiting hours are included. Our Jaipur taxi fares show toll and state tax clearly, with no surge pricing on festival days. See the Jaipur taxi service page for routes and car options.

Khatu Shyam Mandir darshan guide

Khatu Shyam temple timings

The temple opens before sunrise and closes late in the evening, with a break around midday when the deity rests. Summer and winter timings differ by roughly an hour, and on Ekadashi and mela days the temple often stays open longer. Because timings change through the year, check the latest schedule with the temple office or your hotel a day before you go.

Khatu Shyam aarti timings

Five aartis are performed every day:

  • Mangla Aarti – early morning, when the temple opens
  • Shringar Aarti – after Baba Shyam is dressed and decorated
  • Bhog Aarti – around midday, when bhog is offered
  • Sandhya Aarti – at sunset
  • Shayan Aarti – at night, before the doors close

Mangla and Sandhya aarti are the most popular. If you want to attend Mangla aarti, plan to reach Khatu the night before or leave Jaipur by 3:30–4 am.

How darshan works

Darshan is through long barricaded queue lines, which move steadily on normal days. On busy days the wait can stretch to several hours. Phones and bags are best left in the car or at the cloakroom. Offerings like flowers, ittar, mor-pankh (peacock feathers), churma and nishan (saffron flags) are sold in the lanes around the temple.

Best days and crowd guide

  • Calmest: Tuesday to Thursday, early morning.
  • Busy: Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
  • Very busy: every Shukla Paksha Ekadashi and Dwadashi.
  • Peak: the Phalgun Lakkhi Mela (February–March), when lakhs of devotees arrive and many walk the 17 km nishan padyatra from Reengus to Khatu. Expect road diversions and parking far from the temple.

Khatu Shyam railway station: Reengus Junction

There is no railway station in Khatu itself. The nearest Khatu Shyam railway station is Reengus (Ringas) Junction, about 17 km away, on the Jaipur–Sikar–Churu line. Several daily trains connect Jaipur and Reengus. From Reengus station, shared jeeps, autos and taxis run to the temple all day. On mela days, special trains and buses are often added.

Khatu Shyam hotel and dharamshala options

Khatu has many dharamshalas run by trusts and samitis, plus budget and mid-range hotels within walking distance of the temple. Rooms fill up fast around Ekadashi and during the Phalgun mela, so book ahead. If you prefer better hotels, Reengus and Sikar have more choice and are a short drive away. Many Jaipur families simply do a same-day trip and skip the overnight stay.

Places to visit near Khatu Shyam

  • Shyam Kund – the sacred pond next to the temple.
  • Jeen Mata Temple – an ancient Shakti temple in the Aravalli hills, about an hour's drive away and a popular add-on.
  • Salasar Balaji – the famous bearded-Hanuman temple, around 100 km further. Many devotees combine both in one day; see our Khatu Shyam and Salasar Balaji one-day yatra plan.

Practical tips for your yatra

  • Start early. Leaving Jaipur at 5–6 am means shorter queues and no midday heat.
  • Wear comfortable footwear you can leave at the shoe stand, and carry a small bag only.
  • Carry water and some cash for prasad, parking and donations; UPI works in most shops.
  • Keep elders and children close in the queue on busy days.
  • In summer (April–June), visit early morning or evening to avoid the 40°C+ afternoon heat.
  • Check the Ekadashi date in the Hindu calendar before planning a "quiet" visit.
