Amer Fort: the palace

Amer is the most elaborate of Jaipur's forts. Its courtyards rise up the hill from Maota Lake, through the painted Ganesh Pol to the private palaces. The Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace) is the star – a hall covered in thousands of tiny mirrors. Amer was the Kachhwaha capital until Jaipur was founded in 1727. It is the one fort you should not miss. Full details: Amer Fort timings and ticket price.

Jaigarh Fort: the guardian

Jaigarh sits directly above Amer and was built to protect it. It was never captured in battle, and it held the royal armoury and a cannon foundry. Its star attraction is Jaivana, one of the largest cannons on wheels in the world, cast in the fort's foundry in the early 18th century. Jaigarh also has huge rainwater reservoirs, a small armoury museum, and walls that run along the ridge to Amer. It's especially fun for children and anyone interested in military history.

Jaigarh is managed separately from the state monuments, so it has its own ticket and is not part of the composite ticket.

Nahargarh Fort: the viewpoint

Nahargarh stands on the edge of the ridge directly above the Pink City. Inside is Madhavendra Bhawan, a palace with nine identical apartments for the queens. But most people come for the view – watching the sun set and the city lights come on from the ramparts or the Padao restaurant. Read our Nahargarh Fort sunset guide.
